I love the outdoors as many of you do. Taking my camping gear either in the back of my truck or in a back pack on my back, and heading up to the high country in central Arizona or the desert regions in the winter, has been a source of fun and R&R with family and friends most of my 60+ years of life. Now I’ve never been on a cycling road trip but have used a bicycle over the years as transportation to and from school and work. I know many of you do or have considered road trips on a bicycle. This article will be the 1st part of a multi part series on cycling and camping.

In this 1st article we will be going over the reasons why someone would cycle and camp. The following articles will discuss the hows and whys on gear choices for your cycling and camping adventures.

Why cycle and camp:

We are a society that rely on our motor vehicles for most if not all of our transportation, but there are limits to where we can take them in the great outdoors. This could be because of regulations preventing us from taking our motor vehicles into certain wilderness areas or the simple fact that your vehicle just can’t go into those areas without getting stuck. A bicycle or on foot will be the best choice to access these areas and at the same time have the lowest impact on the flora and fauna in those places. I know that in my own back packing experiences that my feet have taken me to places where most people will never see. I’ve also had the extreme blessing of sharing many of those trips with my sons, friends, and in my youth as a Boy Scout with my dad. Those have been memories that I will always cherish. I have never regretted the effort and preparation it took to participate in those trips and receive those blessings. Don’t forget the fact that to walk or ride a bike is great exercise and that is something that most Americans sorely need. The training that should take place before a cycling and/or backpacking trip is just good for our health and well being and is another thing that you and your family can do together.

One of the criteria I use to choose gear for back packing trips is multi purpose usage. I choose gear that will do two or more jobs. This will simplify your gear list and lighten your load.
