The Touching Hands Project Supports Atlanta Hand Day, Free Day of Surgery for Uninsured and Underinsured

Atlanta, GA – On Saturday, November 11, 2017 in Atlanta, The Touching Hands Project (THP) supported the work of surgeons, nurses, anesthetists, therapists, and medical professionals at Georgia Hand, Shoulder and Elbow (GHSE) who volunteered their time to provide free hand surgery and procedures for uninsured and underinsured residents. This event is Hand Day 2017, which took place in three U.S. cities on the same day, including Atlanta, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

During Atlanta Hand Day, Dr. John Seiler led the GHSE team to complete 16 procedures, free of charge, for patients that were previously identified as needing hand care.

“We just completed our 2017 day of domestic service are invigorated by the positive experience of the work. We’ve been able to identify a real need in our community for our services and appreciate the chance to give back to the Atlanta community!” said Dr. Seiler.

THP began in 2014 with a single mission, expanding to five missions in 2015 and ten missions in 2016. In 2016, we completed our first domestic mission, which took place at GHSE. Hand Day 2017 is the continuation and growth of THP’s domestic missions. In 2018, we hope to expand our domestic missions from 4 to 8 annually.

The Touching Hands Project (THP) provides free hand surgery and hand therapy to adults and children in underserved communities around the world. We dream of a day when all those who suffer from a serious hand injury or deformity have access to affordable care and specialized treatment and rehabilitation from compassionate and highly skilled healthcare professionals. Among other donors, THP is funded generously by the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand.
