San Francisco Surgery Center Hosts Hand Day, a Free Day of Reconstructive Hand Surgery for Uninsured and Underinsured Patients

San Francisco, CA – On November 11, the San Francisco Surgery Center (SFSC) hosted a day of reconstructive surgery for underinsured and uninsured patients from the greater San Francisco Bay area. The facility, anesthesia, surgery, and ancillary services were all provided at no cost to the patients.

This event is Hand Day 2017, hosted by The Touching Hands Project, which also took place in Atlanta and Philadelphia on the same day and in Nashville earlier in the year. Dr. Edward Diao was the team leader for the San Francisco site. He was joined by 16 volunteers that included many present and past members of the SFSC staff (anesthesiologists, nurses, surgical techs, administrative and support staff).

Dr. Diao and the team completed four complex surgeries during the mission. “It was a great event,” said Shayne Connelly, Dr. Diao’s Practice Manager. “Spirits were high amongst the volunteers because the patients were so grateful. This was a special way to give back to the community. People are looking forward to doing it again and encouraging others to join in.”

The team was also joined that day by a representative from Stryker, which generously donated surgical equipment and implants for the mission. The patients were screened by referrals from multiple sources, including Operation Access, Clinics by the Bay, and Marin Community Clinics, in addition to Dr. Diao’s private office which screened and treated patients for six months prior to Hand Day.

The Touching Hands Project (THP) provides free hand surgery and hand therapy to adults and children in underserved communities around the world. We dream of a day when all those who suffer from a serious hand injury or deformity have access to affordable care and specialized treatment and rehabilitation from compassionate and highly skilled healthcare professionals. Among other donors, THP is funded generously by the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand.

The San Francisco Surgery Center is centrally located at 450 Sutter Street in downtown San Francisco’s Union Square. Dr. Diao is Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery at University of California San Francisco. He serves as Chief of Hand Surgery at California Pacific Medical Center, Founder and Managing Partner of the SFSC, and Vice President of the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand.
