Melanoma Fund Finances Sophie Mumford to Check and Validate Microrna Biomarkers

West Sussex, RH (January 27, 2018) – Melanoma Fund is aimed at contributing to Melanoma research. The charity also aims at creating melanoma awareness. With a view to helping Sophie Mumford, a research technician working with Prof. Sarah Newbury, Melanoma Fund has funded Sophie Mumford.

Sophie Mumford says “Recent funding from the Melanoma Fund has provided me with the exciting opportunity to work alongside Professor Sarah Newbury and her research team, to check and validate the microRNA biomarkers identified in these initial experiments.

She says Melanoma remains the most dreadful forms of skin cancer. The incidence of this cancer is developing across the world. The rate of survival relies greatly on the stage of the disease and also the diagnosis time. The survival rate is 100% with detection of this cancer at the first stage of the disease. In the case of second stage diagnosis, the chance of survival is 80-90%. The reason is that local tumors are highly curable using surgical resection technique.

When talking about MicroRNA projects and the role of MicroRNAs, she said that they are emerging as the most assuring non-invasive cancer biomarkers. She regularly publishes research reports on her research that is funded by Melanoma Fund for MicroRNAs.

The important aim of Melanoma Fund is to put an end to this skin cancer. The charity aims at doing the same by raising awareness and by helping with funding scientific studies to identify the right cure. This charity was created in remembrance of Myfanwy Townsend passed away due to Melanoma in 1999. Her family founded this charity with a view to preventing the terrible loss from happening to others by creating melanoma awareness and by contributing to research work associated with this skin cancer disease.

Right from the establishment of this funding agency, they have raised more than £600,000 in the form of donations from the loyal supporters and also from the best endeavours made by the husband of MyFanwy – Harry Townsend.

In addition to gathering funds and contributing to studies, the funding agency also aims at making diagnosis more readily available. They do this by working with their partners at free pop-up mole check clinics and motivating people to get their moles checked. In addition, they are motivated to act rapidly if they are diagnosed with melanoma.

Further, Melanoma Fund also educates people on diagnostic signs and everyday precautions they should take to prevent melanoma. In short, Melanoma Fund is for raising awareness, providing support and also for research to curb this deadly cancer.
