World Wide Web – May 17, 2017 Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the person’s ability to breathe over time. Nicole K Montez is raising awareness especially now, as May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. Nicole’s daughter Ali was diagnosed with the disease at the age of two weeks old, and has been living with the symptoms that are often debilitating.

People who are diagnosed and who suffer with Cystic Fibrosis have a defective gene, which causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. When the mucus gathers in the lungs, it clogs the airways and traps bacteria, which leads to more infections, extensive lung damage, and eventually, respiratory failure. When affecting the pancreas, mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.

Today, Ali Montez is 16.  She dances up to 30 hours a week and is beating the odds. Nicole is sharing her story in her first book of a series titled; "Raising Ali”. The book will be available at Amazon.Com this summer.  Ali is sharing her story with a video on Facebook. The video has garnered plenty of attention. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease. The defective CF gene contains a slight abnormality called a mutation. There are more than 1,700 known mutations of the disease and according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry, in the United States, more than 30,000 people are living with cystic fibrosis (more than 70,000 worldwide) and approximately 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year.

Nicole (Ali’s mom) has started a movement this May to raise awareness nationwide.
