University of Wisconsin Law Student Farah Famouri Wins Weisblatt Law Firm Scholarship Essay Contest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KATY, TEXAS, September 19, 2017 – The Weisblatt Law Firm is pleased to announce that Farah Famouri has won the 2017 Weisblatt Law Firm Scholarship Essay Contest. As the winner, Ms. Famouri will receive $1,000 from the firm to help her meet the costs associated with obtaining her Doctor of Law degree.

Ms. Famouri is currently pursuing her law degree at the University of Wisconsin Law School and holds a Master’s Degree in Health Law, Bioethics, and Human Rights from the Boston University School of Public Health. Prior to attending BU, Farah earned her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and International Studies at West Virginia University. She has worked as a Grievance Coordinator for the NYC Department of Correction and has volunteered for AmeriCorps as a Victim Advocate.

Her winning essay explored whether the practice of businesses using arbitration clauses and waivers of the right to a jury trial to avoid the high costs associated with litigation was beneficial to the United States. In her insightful essay, Ms. Famouri concluded that “[a]lthough arbitration clauses are beneficial for businesses, they are ultimately harmful to individuals and consumers and thus do not benefit the United States.” In reaching her conclusion, Farrah in part looked to a study which indicated that “if consumers challenge business practices, limitations on discovery will disadvantage them more than the businesses, as the businesses will hold most of the relevant information.”
