Detroit, MI - Detroit Youth Report’s Detroit Life Coalition; (referred to as the “DLC”) recently hosted a meeting with educators, parents and concerned citizens around the We Choose Campaign. “Our next meeting will be held at Detroit Whole Food Market, 115 Mack Ave, Detroit, MI 48202,” reported a spokesperson for the organization.  “This event takes place on Saturday July 15, 2017 from 11a.m to 12:30p.m. The We Choose Campaign Meeting is free with registration.”

“Our first meeting was a success and members that attended received a copy of the We Choose Campaign Timeline and other supporting documents. Please join us for our second meeting where we will continue to discuss how inequitable policies and poor citizen engagement has led to the dismantling of public education. But more importantly, we will discuss strategy implementation plans on building a State-Wide network around the We Choose Campaign. In addition, guest will be informed that the 7 pillars of the Journey for Justice Education Platform is part of a national campaign (We Choose) lead by the Journey for Justice Alliance.”

“Implementing the 7 pillars of the Journey for Justice Education Platform will allow us to mend the bridges between Detroit students, parents, educators and community organizations while at the same time giving us the opportunity to reestablish a true community-engaged school system,” says Kamau Kheperu of the Detroit Life Coalition.

1.            Moratorium on School Privatization

2.            Creation of 10,000 Sustainable Community Schools

3.            End Zero Tolerance Policies in Public Education

4.            National Equity Assessment

5.            Stop Attack on Black Teacher

6.            End State Takeovers, Appointed School Boards and Mayoral Control

7.            Eliminate the Over-Reliance on Standardized Tests in Public Education
