Wipfli and Wipfli Hewins support the educational development of Chicago youth, in partnership with Money Smart Week

CHICAGO (May 10, 2017) – When it comes to making game-changing life decisions — everything from personal finances to future career aspirations — students generally don’t have the luxury of a textbook or a “how-to” manual. Thanks to two local companies, a group of Chicago youth have been propelled a few steps ahead.

For the second consecutive year, Wipfli LLP (Wipfli), one of the nation’s leading accounting and consulting firms, and Wipfli Hewins Investment Advisors (Wipfli Hewins), a national, CPA-based financial advisor, recently partnered with Money Smart Week® to spearhead two educational programs for Chicago-area students. Founded by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002, Money Smart Week, which ran from April 22-29, is a national, public awareness campaign devoted to helping consumers of all ages become more responsible stewards of their finances and future.

In their first program of the week, “Smart Teens, Smart Money,” Wipfli and Wipfli Hewins took a trip to Chicago’s Walt Disney Magnet School, where they led more than 300 middle-school students in a lesson about short- and long-term goal-setting, saving, budgeting and investing. Presenters also treated students to a Shark Tank-esque exercise, in which three volunteers allocated their “investments” among three mock companies, thus discovering the importance of diversifying risk.

Next, Wipfli and Wipfli Hewins headed to Loyola University Chicago to provide local college students and aspiring professionals with an insider’s look at two of the industry’s most in-demand certifications. In “Becoming a CPA and CFP® Professional,” presenters from both firms shared networking and interviewing tips, personal experiences, industry trends and résumé-writing best practices, among other topics. “It’s not just three letters after your name; it’s a symbol of trust and professionalism,” summed up Thomas Guzi, CPA, co-presenter and senior manager at Wipfli.

Marshall Lund, CFP®, a co-presenter and an associate advisor with Wipfli Hewins, was “extremely humbled” to provide students with additional insight about the industry. “It’s exciting to observe the enthusiasm and ambition these students possess at the outset of their careers,” said Lund. “It’s our responsibility to proactively support our local education systems as they continue to enhance the development of the next generation of financial advisors and CPA professionals.”
