Wipfli and Wipfli Hewins Bring Financial Education to Chicago Public School Students in Partnership with Money Smart Week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CHICAGO (April 5, 2017) – The Great Recession ended in 2009, but its economic and emotional impact still haunt much of the world. The crisis also serves as a cautionary tale for next-generation consumers — more than ever, educators and parents are being proactive in preparing youth to make sound, informed financial decisions. In both the public and private sectors, certain organizations have also picked up the torch and taken strides to make financial education more accessible in their communities.

Two such companies include Wipfli LLP (Wipfli), one of the nation’s leading accounting and consulting firms, and Wipfli Hewins Investment Advisors (Wipfli Hewins), a national, CPA-based financial advisor — for the second consecutive year, the firms are partnering with Money Smart Week® to help bring financial education curriculum to middle-school students at Chicago’s Walt Disney Magnet School.

Founded by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002, Money Smart Week is a national, public awareness campaign devoted to helping consumers of all ages better manage their personal finances. The campaign, which runs from April 22-29, brings together thousands of organizations across the U.S. to coordinate public seminars covering a variety of financial concepts, including events geared toward youth.

“Smart Teens, Smart Money,” which takes place on Thursday, April 20, will provide students with an interactive, engaging lesson in the value of financial goal-setting, budgeting, saving and long-term investing. Students can also put their financial savvy to the test by participating in a contest, in which the winner will receive an individual award and a fun prize for their classroom.

"It’s important for our students to gain sophistication in finance, as it is an integral part of everyone's life,” says Dr. Kathleen Hagstrom, principal at Walt Disney Magnet School. “The more knowledgeable they become, the more likely that they will make good choices as they relate to money in the future."

In addition to the “Smart Teens, Smart Money” workshop, Wipfli and Wipfli Hewins are co-hosting three, additional Money Smart Week seminars in April, covering topics like real estate financing, cybersecurity and more. Visit Wipfli Hewins’ website for more information.
