His visit was the perfect complement to this year’s Mulberry in Action theme of ‘Compassion’

Last week, Portland artist, Gary Hirsch returned to Mulberry School in Los Gatos for a second visit, inspiring the children and sharing his vision of spreading compassion, joy, courage and inspiration to the world. Implementation of his vision, includes his invention of “Bots”, which are colored dominoes meant to represent a theme and give comfort to those who own them. He’s made and given away over 37,000 bots around the world, as well as, painted murals in a variety of cities. (Learn more at

Like his first visit in 2014, Hirsch taught the Mulberry children about his mission, answered their questions, and gave them the opportunity to make their own Bots. Afterward, he worked with the kids to paint Bot murals around the campus.

“Mr. Hirsch’s Bots complement this year’s Mulberry in Action theme of ‘Compassion’.” Says Kara Riordan, Head of School for Mulberry. “The mission of Mulberry in Action, is to teach the children how to be of service to the community. The children relate very well to the concept of Bots and each has their own perspective about what message they want their Bot to communicate.”

By integrating service related themes and activities each year, the children grow up with an awareness that stretches beyond their own environment. They experience the joy of helping sustain and support the community around them. “This is a fundamental part of our mission and core values, which consist of discovery, integrity, collaboration, community, engagement and self-knowledge,” says Riordan. “We would like to whole-heartedly thank Mr. Hirsch for his visits, and for all that he does for our world.”
