New novel is a moving tribute to romantic love in old age—a must-read for all women, but especially those who have dreamt of finding a long-lost love.

Outskirts Press Announces the Release of New Romantic Fiction: Why Scorpions Don't Have Wings by Marina Cortez

[Why Scorpions Don't Have Wings?] June 25, 2017 – Denver, CO and Los Angeles, CA – Outskirts Press—the fastest-growing full-service self-publishing and book marketing company—has just released a new novel about a 70-year-old woman looking for the man she has never been able to forget. Set in the barrios of East Los Angeles, Why Scorpions Don't Have Wings is an eloquent new book by Maria Gonzalez Ortiz (aka Marina Cortez).

Rosa Maria Miranda, 70, is an attractive married woman who returns to the City of Angels to fulfill a dream. She is looking for the man who inspired deep passion in her 35 years ago. But when she does locate 57-year-old Juan Carlos Lamas, he is poor, neglected, and ravaged by alcoholism.

Her love for him—along with pity—surges to the surface once again, and a flashback takes the reader back to 1963, when Rosa and Juan first met and began a turbulent five-year love affair.

Juan Carlos, at 23, was a handsome, charming piano player, but unpredictable and sometimes cruel. Rosa Maria was an older married woman with four children, and the reckless affair generated conflict, including physical abuse from her husband, and threatened to sweep away 16 years of marriage, her home and her children.

Rosa is a woman who refuses to be intimidated by the consequences she knows her foolishness may bring to her life, and she swears to help the present-day Juan recover with the only resource she has: the enduring power of her love. She feels she must take the challenge in order to find the happiness she imagines waits for her despite her advancing age. But she doesn’t count on Juan’s demons…or the struggles and risks she’ll face in trying to save him.

“To the very young, love in old age seems ridiculous, even grotesque,” says the author. “Rosa’s story will resonate with all women whose spirit yearns to be free and find love, no matter what her age.”

About the Author: At the age of ten, Maria Gonzalez Ortiz became the official reader of letters, newspapers and everything that needed reading for a group of illiterate women, as many as ten at a time. A man divided the classic volumes into small pamphlets that he delivered weekly for a small fee. This, of course, inspired in Maria a love for reading and, consequently, writing. She has written and published an autobiography and other short stories for magazines. Why Scorpions Don’t Have Wings is her debut novel. Maria lives in Sylmar, CA, with her husband Ricardo, her daughter Evelyn, her son-in-law Jeff, and grandson Matthew. Also sharing their lives is a sweet little dog named Harry.
