San Diego, California, United States of America – March 16th, 2017 – Dr. Mangiamele recently spoke with Pulse Magazine—the monthly publication for the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association—about her impressive service for LA Animal Services, her veterinary consulting work as an animal cruelty investigator and animal shelter consultant, and her recently published, best-selling memoir, Stray: A Shelter Veterinarian’s Reflection on Triumph and Tragedy.

Stray is a book that takes readers behind the scenes, back to an era when new programs to improve animal care and reduce pet overpopulation were being implemented. As Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Mangiamele was very much involved in being a part of that change.

One such trend-setting program was to start a spay/neuter program as early as eight weeks of age for all adoptions—something unheard of at the time. Her book also increases awareness for the value of animal control departments and staff.

Stray also features Dr. Mangiamele’s own artwork; a curated selection of her animal portraits featured throughout the book. The interview can be read in the online edition of Pulse Magazine (pages 9-10).

Since leaving her position as Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Mangiamele has continued her vocation, working with large and small shelters to create customized programs and protocols which allow agencies to provide optimal care for the animals in their care while prioritizing staff safety. She also travels nationwide assisting animal control law enforcement in their crime scene investigations, veterinary medical forensic reports, and expert witness testimony in dog-fighting cases.

Dr. Mangiamele is a speaker who conducts workshops and training seminars nationally. She also conducts operational assessments of shelters which support staff in achieving the highest possible standards of care. For more information, please visit http://www.doctordena.com.
