Cumming personal injury lawyers in support of federal regulators’ push to test truck drivers for sleep apnea

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CUMMING, Ga., January 27, 2017 – The personal injury attorneys of Boling Rice LLC are voicing their support of proposed federal regulations that would screen truck drivers and other commercial vehicle operators for obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a condition that can lead to drowsy driving and increase a person’s risk of involvement in a crash. The disease causes brief interruptions in a person’s breathing while he or she is asleep that can occur up to 400 times each night and can result in a significantly decreased quality of sleep and chronic fatigue.

Fatigue can affect a person in a number of ways, including negatively impacting their reaction time, causing problems with attention and awareness, and interfering with memory.

In 2016, several federal agencies took the first step in implementing regulations regarding screening commercial vehicle operators for the disease by requesting public comments on the issue

According to the attorneys at Boling Rice, fatigued truck drivers are responsible for a significant number of serious injury-causing accidents each year. Under current regulations, truck drivers are may only drive 11 hours each day after 10 consecutive hours off duty. Unfortunately, many truck drivers choose to skirt these rules in order to keep up with their demanding schedules, putting everyone on the road at risk.

Unfortunately for people with sleep apnea, even 10 hours off duty will not ensure that they are well-rested and capable of driving safely. The lawyers of the firm posit that the proposed obstructive sleep apnea screening would be a step in the right direction of keeping overly fatigued drivers off the road.
