Private plate sale breaks auction price record

04, December 2014: When most people purchase a personalised plate for their car they are willing to spend a few hundred pounds. In the process they can both mask the production year of a used car and also put their own individual stamp on a vehicle they love.

But this week one buyer went further than ever, spending £518,000 on a plate at a DVLA auction and setting a new record in the process.

It was back in 2009 that the last record was set, when someone paid £357,000 for the chance to affix the plate '1D' to their car. But now '25 O' has significantly outstripped this investment and the owner new, John Collins, is intending to put the plate on a classic Ferrari.

The DVLA has operated 150 auctions of this kind over the past quarter century, generating £2 billion in revenue for the public purse as a result. And the £518,000 paid by Mr Collins for this unique plate will no doubt hold its position as the highest amount spent on a personalised number plate for some time to come.

'25 O' was not the only plate that Mr Collins purchased at the auction this month, as he also spend £130,000 to procure '250 L', which he says will end up on his 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso.

A collector of and dealer in classic vehicles from this illustrious Italian marque, Mr Collins can also now claim to be a record breaker.
