The Web Site prettypoli.com has obtained the secret rehearsal tapes showing leading Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and top Republican John McCain reciting their lines to introduce the nominated films “Juno,” “Atonement” and “No Country For Old Men.”
This never-before-seen footage is playing exclusively on prettypoli.com, illustrating in dramatic fashion how the Oscar telecast could have been drastically affected by the writer’s strike.
When it appeared top Hollywood talent would be hamstrung by the strike, Oscar producers said they naturally turned to the presidential candidates, explaining that the publicity hungry candidates “are never at a loss for words and wouldn’t miss the opportunity to capture such a large audience” for the world.
“You give these guys a microphone and you let them go,” said one producer who asked that his name not be used. “I know we usually like to avoid politics at the Oscars, but who else were we gonna turn to? Besides, we had Al Gore on last year’s telecast, and he was a hit. This was the natural next step.”
Producers said the candidates standing in for the stars did well, for the most part. But as you’ll see on the tapes, these political animals couldn’t help injecting issues from the campaign into their film introductions.
“It was a novel concept and the tapes make for an alternate take on the Oscars,” said one top executive. “But all things being equal, I’m glad we have our writers back on the job churning out corny jokes for our stars to stumble over as they misread the Teleprompter on Oscar night.”
The writers strike may be over and the Oscars is schedules to be presented as planned this Sunday, but secret contingency plans show producers were prepared to tap this year presidential candidates to present this years films
