Going Beyond: Southfield Public Library’s Books & Beyond Festival Brings Free Entertainment and Education to Community
Southfield, MI – There is something for everyone at Southfield Public Library’s third annual Southfield Books & Beyond Festival on September 15 & 16 from 1:00 – 5:00pm. The two-day festival is open to the public and will offer visitors free, family-friendly events on the front lawn—as well as in the Tower Lobby—of the Library. All ages are welcome to meet authors, listen to a great storyteller, and celebrate books as a valuable source of learning, information and entertainment. “Books & Beyond is a great opportunity to hear local and regional authors, buy their books and get autographs! It’s geared for the whole family, so bring the kids and check it out!” said City Librarian David Ewick.
On Saturday, September 15th the following list of events are scheduled: • Paul Miles, will kick off the event from 1:00-1:30pm. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Paul “The Blue Man” Miles live on the lawn at the Southfield Public Library. Paul Miles is a multi-talented singer songwriter and musician! • Children’s author Gary Schmidt, will speak at 1:30pm, followed by a book signing in the Featured Authors Tent. Mr. Schmidt is the author of Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, which won both a Newbery Honor and a Printz Honor. His other novels include the newly released, The Wednesday Wars along with Anson’s Way and Straw Into Gold. • Beverly Jenkins, is an African-American historical romance writer. Her books include: Topaz, Sexy/Dangerous, Winds of the Storm and many more! Ms. Jenkins will give a presentation at 3:15pm, followed by a book signing in the Featured Authors Tent. • Marjorie Shaefer as Mother Goose, the Storyteller will captivate audiences with a delightful program of rhymes, fables and fairy tales told in costume as Mother Goose, with her puppet goose named “Canada.” Whether you are three or ninety-three, come and join the fun from 3:00 - 4:00pm on the front lawn of the library. • The Friends of the Southfield Public Library will host a used book sale in the Tower Lobby from 1:00 to 4:00pm. • There will be children’s activities in the Art Pavilion from 1:00 to 5:00pm including a dragon bean bag toss, a croquet course and horseshoes. • The Writers Pavilion will host the following local authors on Saturday: Jeff Acs, Heather Buchanan, Monica Marie Jones, R. J. Kovel, Michael A. LaFlamme, Michael D. Poe, Conrad Prophet, Dennis L. Reed II, Gary Reed, C. L. Rossman, Tonya Shirelle, Paul D. Storrie, Kenneth Tyson, Jr., LaShon F. Williams, Rob. M. Worley and Robin Wright King.
On Sunday September 16th the following list of events are scheduled: • Four Seasons String Quartet will be performing from 1:00- 1:30pm. Enjoy the music of Heidi Kim, Maggie Starr, Ashilee Roberts and Paul Your. They are members of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra. • Featured children’s author, Wong Herbert Yee, author and illustrator of Hamburger Heaven, Fireman Small, Big Black Bear, A Drop of Rain, The Officers’ Ball, Detective Small in the Amazing Banana Caper and more, will speak at 1:30pm, followed by a book signing, in the Auditorium. • Naomi Long Madgett will be in the Featured Authors Tent at 2:30pm followed by a book signing. Naomi Long Madgett, Detroit’s Poet Laureate since 2001, is the author of nine collections of poetry, editor of two anthologies and author of two textbooks. Among her more recent collections are: Octavia: Guthrie and Beyond and Connected Islands: New and Selected Poems. She also has been the moving force behind Lotus Press, Inc., the leading publisher of distinguished poetry by African Americans. She is a former Detroit Public School teacher and a professor of English emeritus at Easter Michigan University. • There will be a poetry open mic hosted by Poetry, Pages and Scribes’ Ber-Henda Williams. from 3:15 - 5:00pm following Naomi Long Madgett’s presentation.
