Derry – Northern Ireland, October 8th 2007
Oct 05, 2007 -- /prbuzz/ --Irish Author and Poet, John Harkin releases his first ever collection of poems for Global viewing.
The Poet “Harkin”, with a huge backlog of creative and inspiring poetry, has for the first time, published a beautiful collection of deep and inspiring collection titled “The Red Cabaret”.
Using LULU.COM’s on-line publishing service, John Harkin has taken Irish poetry back to the people. Not since the days of Samuel Beckett, has there been a more jaw dropping and dark comic collection of poems been released. Hailing from the same Irish county “Derry area” as Seamus Heany. Harkin draws upon local observations for much of his writings.
Extract from “The Red Cabaret”………. “I crawled like a snake, From the wrong side of the park bench. Dispersing the daily blankets into the wind, And watching the gray squirrel perform Handstands half way out a branch, I drew a breath to confirm my life. Then I feel almost sure I grinned. Subconscious-like.”
From the poem: St. Jude’s Days Off (The Red Cabaret)
About the Author
John Harkin was born in Preston on 11 January 1964 he moved to Ireland at the age of 10. He has lived among the tribes of the north since 1974 in county Derry.
After drinking, and listening to an old Bob Dylan record a friend had lent him, he thought “maybe anyone could do this.” He stole a guitar but failed miserably, mostly due to his tone deafness – music was not in him. As he later said, “For heaven’s sake I can’t even talk in tune.”
Then he read Dylan Thomas and Samuel Beckett and realised hardly anyone could write like that. He laid down his guitar and lifted the pen. He felt a vocation. He started to steal books, he even read them. He started to write poetry but kept it close to his chest. Poetry was not sexy in 80s Ireland. Actually it was but not where he lived.
His poetry became his own secret.
Until now, with the release of “The Red Cabaret”.
With the help of his brother Terry Harkin, an established Graphic Designer, John Harkin has finally hit the book shelves, and on-line stores.
