Perhaps some of that is justified – their definition of a ‘full time’ degree is quite different to what the rest of us believe ‘full time’ really means. But credit where credit is due – many students take their creativity and entrepreneurial streak, and turn it into something real. Ilan Design was started by 20 year old student Ilan Gutman, who lives in Bondi, and is studying Commerce at the University of New South Wales. The initial spark for the website occurred whilst Ilan was travelling through Asia “I was travelling in a lot of remote places, and I bought some really unique jewellery for my girlfriend. The response from everyone who saw her wearing it was overwhelming”.

What followed came naturally to Ilan, who was able to use everything he learned from his Commerce degree to establish his own costume jewellery business. He initially began to sell through stores, and had great success. His clients include stores from Bondi to Balmain, and the response was amazing. The next step for Ilan was to go directly to the customer via his website.

Ilan describes his university studies as critical to the success of his business “My degree has been beneficial to the whole process from the beginning. Studying Economics has taught me to think about what people are looking for, and without studying Information Systems, I doubt whether the website could ever have become a reality.”
