STOCKPORT SET TO BECOME THE ARTISTIC CENTRE OF THE NORTH
Vernon Mill Artists set to put Stockport on the cultural map!
The Vernon Mill Artists (V.M.A.), based on the top floors of Vernon Mill, are embarking on a mission to set Stockport apart from all other regional towns and cities as a cultural hot-spot, simmering over with creative energy, diversity and potential.
Already the largest group of original artist in the North of England, the Vernon Mill Artists have just established themselves as a CIC (Community Interest Companies a new kind of not-for-profit limited company), and are the newest centre for social, cultural and commercial diversity in the Northwest. So far the Vernon Mill Artists have battled through valiantly with limited funding for exhibitions and events, which largely have been paid for by the artists and members of the group themselves.
As part of this ongoing agenda the group are holding an exhibition in which the artists studios will be open to all visitors. There will be an opening celebration that will kick-start the weekend events on the evening of Friday 19th October 7pm – 10pm. Live bands and refreshments will welcome all visitors wishing to be entertained by contemporary art as they freely wander the studios and vast corridor spaces of the 3rd and 4th floors of the listed Victorian Mill.
The mill and studios will then be open to all on the weekends of Saturday 20th - Sunday 21st and also Saturday 27th – Sunday 28th October between the hours of 10am and 4pm.
The Exhibition is part of the new chapter in which the exhibition space itself will see a dramatic facelift within the coming months. Most importantly of all the group intend to make Vernon Mill a place that houses a constant stream of events and exhibitions enabling us to highlight Stockport as a fertile and rich home for housing and developing the arts. The Artists’ doors are always open to you, as a place to enjoy stimulating conversation with artists and other visitors, soak up the atmosphere and of course discover that special piece of original art.
Vernon Mill is 15 minutes walk from Stockport town centre. By car, it is a few hundred meters south of Portwood roundabout (junction 27 of the M60)
Community Interest Companies (CIC's) were introduced by the Government in 2006 as a new kind of not-for-profit limited company. As a CIC, Vernon Mill Artists can establish itself as a self-sustaining and positive force for celebrating and furthering cultural richness and diversity in the area. This process will be paid for by trading activities within the mill, by grant aid and social partnership funding provided for specific community related projects.
