This Naples Florida K-Mart is actually open. They put their hurricane shutters up around 7:30 PM. Unlike K-Mart, most Naples area business have not put up their hurricane shutters. This store has an innovative idea. They leave an opening for the door and then close it up with a pallet of mulch when the storm comes. However, we wonder how safe it is to have only one door.
Florida resident are warned to be prepared for hurricanes in advance. Repeated warnings are give to have a full tank of gas. Three out of 10 gas stations that we drove by were out of gas. This station near Marco Island had a cute sign warning of heavy rain. Did they think we did not listen to the news?
Marco Island prepared by placing temporary stop signs and generators at every intersection with a stop light. The small island puts the signs out until they are able to start the generators to operate the lights. Marco Island is calm. There are very few cars on the street or people at restaurants.
We saw an unusually large number of emergency vehicles on the street, mostly ambulances rushing to emergencies. This is very unusual for this time of night.
Gated neighborhoods prepared for Ernesto by removing their gates in case the power went out and they were not able to operate. This is an important safety precaution to make it possible for emergency vehicles to respond and residents to flee an emergency.
There is some talk about towns to the south of Naples loosing power already. Some speculate that the power was shut off intentionally to prepare for the storm.
