FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Son of a Prostitute, New Face of New Zealand Film and Television
Raglan, New Zealand - November 17, 2007 – Rebel Director Sasha Perry, is on the verge of international success after starting pre-production on his new animated series “Maui the Mantis” with production company giant Greenstone Pictures.
The son of a former prostitute who’s first word as a baby was the F-word, has already made a name for himself as one of New Zealand’s top musical directors after directing the international documentaries, ‘This is us: The Horius MC story’ and ‘Regan: In his own words’.
He also created the hit TV series, ‘Roots Music,’ New Zealand’s first 100% ‘unplugged’ music show that stared amongst others, older brother Darcy, New Zealand’s premier Blues musician and younger brother Regan, who is currently having his debut album being produced by music legend Mike Nielson of U2 and Jamirique fame.
As good as things look now for this talented 33 year old, a turbulent and troubled past almost derailed his talent before his potential was realized.
With both of his parents being severely abused as children, home life was far from normal for Sasha and his three brothers.
“I think my parents did the best job they could to break the cycle of abuse they had been through growing up. Us boys were left to our own devices from a very early age but when you compare what we went through to what my parents went through, we were very lucky.”
Having very little adult supervision meant that Sasha found himself in numerous unique situations including, being caught with his fathers playboy magazines at school at the age of 8, burning down his family house while playing with matches and having girlfriends stay over from the age of thirteen.
With their parents hardly at home and fathers strong anti religious stance, the Perry boys were raised with very little super vision but their father never let them miss out on second hand musical instruments filling the home with everything from guitars to brass band instruments. The pride of the collection though was a full drum set worth nearly three thousand dollars that was picked up for $500 because the owner couldn’t afford his drug debt.
With Regan playing in some of this country’s roughest bars since he was just thirteen, it was natural for Sasha to follow him around with borrowed video equipment, sparking his love affair with the visual medium.
Sasha started to post his art with its unique sense of story telling, humor, social conscience and anger online, instantly finding a dedicated hard-core fan base.
This success gave him the confidence to pitch his work to the heavy hitters of the New Zealand film and television industry and the work hasn’t stopped coming since. Sasha is quickly establishing himself as one of the most creative and original artists on the planet.
“The hardest thing about making films is to try and get money from people without their input creatively. There are artists, and then there are people who are good with money. I’m into art not conversation. When people let me just be creative life is really good and the quality of work is unquestionable.”
Perhaps Sasha’s success isn’t surprising when you realize that he and his brothers are fourth generation New Zealand Musicians, and their Great Grandfather helped pave the way for the New Zealand film scene when as part of a Salvation Army team, was commissioned to make films by the government during the late 1890’s.
“My family has a long history of being blue-collar storytellers, so filmmaking came easy for me. I’ve never been restricted by rules or other people’s beliefs.”
After conquering his sex and drug addictions and getting his life firmly on track, Sasha is focused on his inevitable future as one of our leading filmmakers.
