Congonhinhas, Parana, Brazil -- June 23, 2009 -- Brazil’s President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva announced today the “Light for All” (Luz Para Todos) Program bringing electricity to more than 2 million rural families.
A centerpiece of Brazil’s social inclusion policy, a Brazil Ministry of Mines and Energy survey found that Light for All was having significant impact on isolated, rural communities including improved community and housing conditions and increased household income and access to quality of life improvements such as refrigeration, running water, computers, telephones or schools with evening classes. Brazil announced plans to expand the program to reach an additional a million more families by end of 2010.
