Jamul, CA --  Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and you may be starting to panic trying to find that perfect gift for your loved one.  Poet William Roetzheim tells us that the best Valentine’s Day present can’t be bought but must be made, and top on his list is a personalized valentine containing a poem you wrote yourself.

“You can’t go wrong even with a bad poem,” he says, “because it will be honest and from the heart.”  For those of you with trepidation at the thought of putting your heart on paper, Roetzheim offers some guidance.

“The most important thing is to make it personal to the two of you.  Start with a list of places, things, people, memories, and so on that are special to the two of you.  Then decide whether you want to go for humorous or romantic.  For a warm but humorous poem use rhymes and work in as many things from your list as possible.  If you have a difficult time getting started, try taking a classic love poem and modifying the words to fit the two of you.  Your poem will be fun with an underlying sense of romance.

“If you’re going for pure romance, you might want to avoid rhyme altogether.  Instead, try selecting one or two things from your list and making those the focal point of a very poetic description.  Compare some aspect of the thing being described to something else, as in ‘the trees overhead rustled with a sound like a mountain brook.’ Relate your description to your feelings of love.  For an even more special card, look for a picture to go with your poem.”

William Roetzheim is the author of 17 books, including The Giant Book of Poetry, and he directed and produced over 15 poetry audio CDs.  His audio CD Poems of Romance (ISBN: 978-0-9768001-4-9) is a collection of classic and modern romantic poems.  Poems of Romance is available for $9.95 from www.level4press.com .
