December 18, 2007 -- The late Italian Director Lucio Fulci is an icon amongst horror fans the world over. Since his death in March of 1996, like most great artists, his popularity has only increased over the years, but little is known about who he really was both on and off the set.
Conceptualized by Producer Mike Baronas, “Paura: Lucio Fulci Remembered ~ Volume 1” sheds some light on the often misunderstood Fulci through the eyes of those he engaged with throughout his long and diverse moviemaking career. Baronas’ yearning to know who Fulci really was led him down a seven year path to meeting well over 100 folks who worked with the maestro.
Originally intended as a book, the one on-camera question asked of each interviewee (“What is your fondest memory of Lucio?”) struck the heart of the project. “My original idea for the DVD was simply as a bonus for fans to get to see what these people look like today, and it turned out to be a much more poignant aspect of what I was trying to accomplish than I imagined,” states Baronas. “I got a broad range of answers, but more than that, a peek into who he was as a person, which is the real crux of what I was trying to do with the book. Looking at them all together is pretty moving.”
Known for atmospheric settings and show stopping gore effects, Fulci’s wildly popular horror films were preceded by the entire breadth of Italian cinema – from musicals, to sex comedies, to spaghetti westerns, to gialli. Baronas tried to include the gamut of Fulci’s entire career. “With 88 total individual interviews on the DVD, I was able to capture tales from a large portion of his life, but there are, of course, many more stories left to be told.” Notable interviews include: Fabrizio De Angelis, Florinda Bolkan, Catriona MacColl, Sergio Salvati, Paolo Malco, Giannetto De Rossi, and Corinne Clery amongst others.
Baronas also interviewed 14 of Fulci’s contemporaries – including Ruggero Deodato, Umberto Lenzi, Lamberto Bava, Enzo Castellari, Luigi Cozzi, Michele Soavi, etc. – who relay what Lucio means to Italian cinema.
Slated for release on February 26, 2008, pre-orders for the DVD will go on sale via www.PauraProd.com on January 6, 2008 – 12 years to the day that many American fans got to meet Fulci at Fangoria Magazine’s “Weekend of Horrors” convention in New York, his only public US appearance.
Baronas will be heading out in March with legendary EuroCult actor Giovanni Lombardo Radice (“City of the Living Dead”, “Cannibal Ferox”, “House on the Edge of the Park”) to promote the DVD at a number of horror conventions across the country.
