NOVEMBER 2006- 5 DUTCH DAYS MANHATTAN
300 YEARS LATER -ANCESTORS OF RESOLVED WALDRON AND JOHN BOWNE MEET
Dutch Immigrants and First Case of Religious Freedom in North America Recalled
Averill Park, N.Y.-Three and a half centuries ago, Peter Stuyvesant, Director General of the New Netherlands colony, made 40 year old widower Resolved Waldron an offer that would change his life. The Dutch war hero invited his old comrade to New Amsterdam with the promise of a job as assistant sheriff.
After personal experience living in the failed Dutch Colony in Brazil, and the death of his first wife, Waldron was very familiar with the pain of loss, yet despite all he was determined to begin again. Peter Stuyvesant in a real sense had offered him back his life, but more importantly America offered a chance for a future for Resolved’s three young children.
Along with immigrants from across the globe, the Waldrons face the trials of adapting to a fledgling country and become a unique part of history. One of Resolved’s duties is to arrest Englishman, John Bowne, whose Quaker wife, Hannah, is preaching. The Bowne arrest and subsequent trial is widely believed to be the first case of religious freedom in North America. (The Bowne House still stands today in Flushing, N.Y.)
Author, Gloria Waldron Hukle, a native of New York State, is an llth –generation American in the line of the Dutch Waldron family. Three more novels are in progress. (More Information available: www.gloriawaldronhukle.name )
