| We need a practical way to quickly supply decent, low-cost starter homes. Oct 11, 2007 -- /prbuzz/ --Throughout the world, affordable starter homes are desperately needed to alleviate poverty. People are dying like flies in appalling conditions. Human beings are homeless, trying to eek out an existence in shanty towns and make-shift camps; jobless, starving, mostly ignored, and blamed for their predicament.
In the UK, The Labour government openly acknowledged the need for new affordable social housing, challenging building companies to make lower-cost brick built houses. The scheme attracted much interest but the constructions were disappointing -the quality was criticised and the cost, still beyond most who need a starter home, has to be heavily subsidised by Tax-payers.
Sweeping aside the fact that up-to-date prefab housing would actually offer better quality and safer housing, land has been designated for more unaffordable yellow brick estates - some, controversially, on flood plains and the (precious) Green belt!
What should world governments now do to stop the insane vicious circle of traditional building costs causing yet more hardships?
The answer is this: Encourage the provision of decent, really low-cost, mass-produced starter homes i.e. a module specially designed to fill the housing gap. A simple accommodation unit that is modern, eco-friendly, with water-tight joints, and Super-strong making it uniquely weather, and earthquake, resistant.
To raise awareness about this very important issue, a new book has recently been launched: Title: The Alternative (Focused On The Need To Save Humanity). It is on-line and can be read for free.
(The printed book can also be purchased via Amazon.co.uk).
Background: Frustrated by being homeless, after working as a designer, the author, G. Speke, did 18 years of research to establish feasibility: A summary of this research is included in the book.
