NAS International Hosts 11th Annual Area Zero’s Konvaj
June 8 – 10, 2007
UNO Memorial Tribute celebrates the lives of three fallen Pyrates;
Umeadi, Nwachie and Oji families acknowledged
Los Angeles, CA – International (NAS) - The National Association of Seadogs, a non-profit organization dedicated to humanitarian and social activism hosted their 11th Annual General meeting June 8 - 10 to further the goals of the organization and honor those lost. The meeting was held at the Hollywood Park Casino in Inglewood. The memorial tribute, named UNO, an acronym culled from the first letter of their last names of the lost members, who lost their lives traveling to Oakland from southern California 10 years earlier, was the highlight of the Converge 2007.
“It was June 7, 1997 that we lost three titans, Brother Pyrates, Chido Umedi, Collins Nwachie, and Ik Oji who lost their lives in a fatal car accident, on their way to NAS meeting. Though they might be gone, they are not forgotten. Stoic, selfless and Spartan they all touched a chord in each one of us as the best and brightest of what each member of The National Association of Seadogs aspires to be,” said Capone, Ebunie Jiagbogu. “In honor of their memory the zone intends establishing a memorial fund after consultations with the deceased family members in their names.”
The three-day conference included a memorial for the lost brothers, a dinner-dance, a colloquium discussion, and the group’s ceremonial “sayling”—a boat trip where members pass on the heritage and tradition of the organization. During the colloquium, members analyzed the qualities of what makes a good pyrate and made decisions around advancing the organization’s mission of “fighting the ills of society.”
NAS seeks to promote the Original Seven founder’s vision of promoting “a more and just and humane society.” Since the organization’s founding in 1952, Converges have been held once a year, to focus on avenues of attaining that vision.
Located in Inglewood, California, the 8Quake zone, California’s actively strives for the betterment of the community. For the past several years, the zone has participated in the Annual Aids Walk.
