MyConservationBaby.com Accepted Into Nonprofit Environmental Organization |

May 10, 2007 |
Fletcher, NC--May 10, 2007--MyConservationBaby.com is an Internet-based retailer which sells baby clothes with conservation-inspired messages. Co-founded by Ellen McNeill and her husband, Michael, the company was formed to help increase public awareness of conservation issues using society’s “littlest speakers.” “Our goal is to help create awareness of conservation issues and the importance for each of us to take whatever action we can to positively impact the world around us,” says Ellen McNeill.
Early on MyConservationBaby.com made the decision that it wanted to donate a portion of every purchase to a nonprofit environmental organization. When the company began researching nonprofits it became clear that there were many organizations doing valuable environmental work. The company realized that selecting a recipient for its donation wasn’t going to be as easy as initially thought. That’s when McNeill came across an article in Fortune magazine highlighting green companies.
One of the companies highlighted was Patagonia, a well-known outdoor clothing company. In the article Yvon Chouinard, environmental activist and founder of Patagonia, talked about One Percent for the Planet and piqued McNeill’s interest.
She visited their website and learned a little history about the organization. Chouinard and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, created the alliance in 2001. Both men had achieved great success with an environmental commitment and they wanted to unify other companies to help solve the environmental crisis and build successful companies at the same time.
McNeill called for information and received a packet that explained how the alliance works and the commitment of its members to a form of “environmental tithing.” Each member agrees to donate at least 1% of its gross sales to one or more of the scores of 1%FTP-approved environmental organizations.
Each member signs a legal document promising to make the one percent contribution and agrees to provide proof of gross sales and selected donation recipients. McNeill applied for consideration as a member and her application was recently approved. She just couldn’t wait for permission to use the 1%FTP logo on her website, MyConservationBaby.com.
“Now I have a true focus,” says McNeill. “I know what I’m going to give and where my contribution is going to go. It’s a great feeling to know that my donation dollars will be well-utilized.”
