Houston, Tx. – September 5, 2007 – City council members will gather to address members of the Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals (HAULYP) during the organization's 4th Annual State of the City Forum on Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at 6:30 pm. A new addition to the format is the State of State Forum featuring members of Houston's delegation to the Texas State Legislature. The event will be held at the Houston Area Urban League headquarters, 1301 Texas Avenue.

The forum, moderated by Melinda Spaulding, KRIV-TV Channel 26's Fox Morning News anchor, presents local officials with questions fielded from HAULYP's more than 150 members covering issues related to the National Urban League's (NUL) Five Point Agenda of Economic Empowerment; Education and Youth Leadership Empowerment; Civic Engagement Empowerment; Health and Quality of Life Empowerment, and Civil Rights and Racial Justice Empowerment. Panelists will also address issues raised in the Opportunity Compact, NUL's slate of policy recommendations released in July during its annual conference. Specific questions cover the gamut from the challenges of marketing Houston as a tourism destination and the future of entrepreneurship in light of Houston's changing business landscape to the balance of taxation between homeowners and industry.

Members will also seek answers on the impact of Houston Independent School District's proposed school closures on viable neighborhoods; state funding of higher education; the potential for city zoning laws in light of the new Sexually Oriented Business ordinance, and the City's plans for assisting individuals displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita who will be further displaced when federal housing provisions expire in December of this year.

City council members from all districts and at-large positions were invited to participate in the forum. Almost all have agreed to attend. Additional confirmations have been received from State Representatives Hubert Vo, Garnett Coleman and Harold Dutton.

An auxiliary of the Houston Area Urban League, HAULYP represents a diverse cross-section of Houston's business community. Its members work with many of the City's top corporations, with 89 percent holding a bachelor's degree or higher. Top professions represented include finance, law, engineering, medicine and banking. Approximately six percent are small business owners. While the group's age range is 21 to 40, adults between ages 26 and 35 comprise the vast majority of its membership at 64 percent.
