JERSEY SHORE LANDMARK PASSES ANOTHER MILESTONE

HIGHLANDS, NJ, DECEMBER 31, 2006: Bahrs Landing one of the country’s oldest family run restaurants, 4 generations, is celebrating it’s 90th year in business. Jay Cosgrove a great grandson of the founders John (Jack) & and Florence (Flo) Bahrs, has taken over the reigns from his father Ray, who has owned the restaurant since purchasing it from his in-laws, Bud & Peg Bahrs, in 1973. In 1917 Jack Bahrs’ “very Special” Manhattan Clam chowder was the impetus for the beginnings of the soon to become seafood restaurant dynasty in Highlands. Jack learned to cook while serving as the cabin boy aboard his captain father’s tall ship. Carrying cargo freight from Europe to the Caribean and the Americas Jack perfected recipes that are still with the restaurant today including chowders, coleslaw and key lime pie.

Bahrs Landing is located ever under the Highlands/Sandy Hook Drawbridge on the tidal banks of the Shrewsbury river. It seats 225 customers inside and 125 outside, has 2 Bars, and banquet facilities for up to 105. One of the more majestic locations in New Jersey, Bahrs Property has river and ocean views a lively marina, a museum quality nautical artifact displayed in it’s weathered wood paneled lobby. To complete the scene it sits under the watchful eyes of the National Historic Landmark The Twin Lights light house perched high on the hill above the restaurant’s neon roof sign. Bahrs is literally the ‘first stop’ on the Jersey Shore.

A family tradition for the owners and customers alike, Bahrs Landing continually voted Best Family Restaurant by NJ Monthly. Bahrs employees 50 full time and over 100 part time employees some employed for over 50 years. Bahrs Landing has served over 12 million meals, estimates Cosgrove which includes 4.7 million pounds of lobster, 50 thousand bushels of steamer clams, 450 thousand gallons of clam chowder (or 56 tractor trailers). Some of the famous customers over the years included Frank Sinatra, Joe DiMaggio, Burl Ives, Ernest Borgnine, Bonnie Raite, Kevin Smith, Bobby Flay, Tony Soprano and John Bonjovi among other seafood eating celebrities. According to American Express Card, more than 50% of Bahrs customers travel more than an hour by car or boat to dine with friends and family says Cosgrove, making it a true Destination restaurant.

Customers can buy Bahrs famous chowders and lobster Bisque when they are not at the Shore. Bahrs Landing canned chowders and seafood soups including Lobster Bisque and Oyster Stew are sold in over 600 grocery stores in the North East as far away as Vermont and can be purchased on Bahrs.com as well as in the restaurant. It can be shipped anywhere.

Cosgrove is compiling for a DVD slideshow, a collection of historic photos which he has inherited and borrowed. This DVD is to be shown in the restaurant on a new flat panel tv for customers to view while waiting for their table. He is also looking for any photo contributions from customers may have saved to add to the DVD. Look for the slideshow debut and other 90 year events to be posted o www.bahrs.com for year long celebration. To help celebrate the 90th Bahrs will give a free meal to anyone dining at Bahrs on their 90th birthday in 2006.
