Inttranet™ "Linguists of the Year" nominees for 2007 designated

Dec 17, 2007 -- /prbuzz/ --Rouen, France (Inttranet) - 12-17-2007 - The shortlist for the Inttranet™ Linguists of the Year for 2007 has been published, and as usual is liable to create controversy. Nominees range from Adjmal Nasqhbandi, the Afghan interpreter beheaded by the Taliban, to Washoe, the first chimpanzee to learn a human sign language, and teach it to her son.

These honorary citations by the members of the Inttranet, the global network of professional interpreters and translators, recognize the struggle - and sometimes the personal sacrifice - of linguists who have helped increase public awareness of the importance of linguists and languages during the year. Nominees for the honorary awards are selected in relation to their impact in the media during the year, and submitted for an electronic vote by the members of the Inttranet™, the global network of professional interpreters and translators.

The nominees for the Inttranet Linguists of the Year Awards for 2007 are:

The Abu Dhabi Authority for the Kalima project to correct the Arabic translation deficit
Nour al-Khal, Iraqi interpreter, and a woman of great courage
Laleh Bakhtiar, for her courage as a feminist translator of the Qur'an
Sudhanshu Chaturvedi, veteran translator
Sibel Edmonds, the former FBI translator who will not keep her tongue
Clayton Eshleman who has spent 48 years translating César Vallejo's poetry
Amir Fetanat, Iranian translator subject to censorship
Fundéu for promoting the correct use of Spanish in the media
IBM for the development of the Virtual Deaf Interpreter
Michael Krauss for his Study of Indigenous Languages
Miguel León-Portilla for raising awareness about the Nahuatl language
Ann Luong Spiratos for creating the first known Interpreting Academy of its kind in the US
Adjmal Nasqhbandi, the Afghan interpreter we forgot
Umida Niyazova, human rights translator imprisoned in Uzbekistan
Professor Okoth Okombo, Kenyan sign language pioneer
Melinda Paras for founding the Health Care Interpreter Network
Sergio Pitol for combining translation with human rights
Jean Pruvost, lexicographer
Ruma Roka, founder of the Noida Deaf Society
Professor Achhru Singh, Punjab translator and living legend
Sandra Thompson and Charles Li for their reference grammar of the Wappo
The London Times for forcing the British government to revise its Iraqi interpreter policy
Lorna Williams for honouring and preserving Indigenous languages and world views
Washoe, the chimpanzee who taught us the most about human language
