International Society for Medical Publication Professionals Adopts Code of Ethics
December 17, 2007
Dec 17, 2007 -- /prbuzz/ --Ewing, NJ – December 17, 2007 – When the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) first organized in March 2005, the leadership and membership were in agreement that a voluntary code of ethics was needed, to provide a professional resource for medical writers and communicators, publication planners, and other professions represented in ISMPP’s membership.

“The ISMPP Code of Ethics is an important statement by this organization, in that it puts forward what our organization believes our members should strive for in their day-to-day work,” said Larry Hirsch, MD, President of ISMPP. “It’s a code we can all aspire to meet, and provides guidelines that educates our individual members, corporate members, sponsors and other members.”

“A cross-functional committee, composed of representatives from medical publishing, medical communications agencies, and the pharmaceutical industry collaborated for over a year to develop the ISMPP Code of Ethics,” said Al Weigel, Chairman of the ISMPP Ethics Committee. “A critical step in this process was the consideration of feedback received from the organization’s general membership at our annual meeting in April, which resulted in a number of changes to the document.”

As a result, the ISMPP Board of Trustees has formally adopted the ISMPP Code of Ethics, the full text of which is available online at http://www.ismpp.org. It is a voluntary code, with no disciplinary action mandated.

ISMPP is a non-profit, voluntary professional membership association dedicated to advancing medical publication planning and development, supporting medical publication professionals, and ensuring ethical medical publication practices. ISMPP promotes quality professional standards and practices, and encourages members to meet these. Members should act in a manner that promotes integrity and reflects positively on the individual professional, ISMPP, and the medical publication profession, consistent with accepted ethical and legal standards.

The newly-adopted Code of Ethics presents guidelines intended to assist ISMPP members in understanding their professional responsibilities, to advance their profession and promote quality clinical research publication practices. The Code of Ethics includes general professional guidelines and professional services guidelines. The ISMPP Code of Ethics also includes specific professional conduct guidelines, such as “publication preparation” and “publication disclosure,” as well as “intellectual property protection” and conflict of interest and appearance of impropriety guidelines.
