Fortune 500 employee quits the rat race to write funny poems and songs about it

With a new book release, website, and live performance ‘Office Poetry’ seeks to provide stress relieving laughter for millions of office workers around the globe.

Millions of Americans claim that work related stress and anxiety cause job dissatisfaction and conflict in the workplace. All these complaints build up over time and can cause employees to dread having to go to work each day. With studies showing that humor in the office can relieve stress and frustration, office related humor has surged in popularity not only from employees seeking to be entertained, but also management seeking to provide comic relief to their employees. As companies strive to promote an environment of creativity and innovation humor about the office has been shown to be an effective tool.

So where do employees and managers go to provide clean office related humor? Robert Petta, through his own experience in sales and customer service at several Fortune 500 companies discovered that writing funny poems about the workplace helped him and other employees laugh about very things that were causing frustration. Petta began writing poems about four years ago with witty titles such as “Please Micro-Manage Me” and “Cube Farm” that twisted the sources of anxiety into hilarious rhymes that poked fun at the workplace. Petta focused on the most common personalities, situations, and trappings of the office that he felt had universal appeal. So he wrote more poems like “The Coffeemaker,” “The Fax Machine,” “Workstation,” ‘Spam.” After about a year Petta had written over fifty poems and decided to publish them in a new book including hand drawn illustrations entitled “Office Poetry.”

Due to the positive response from reciting the poems, Petta decided to produce a live multi-media performance based on the book called “Office Poetry Live!” In the performance Petta recites over twenty of the most popular poems in an animated character and plays wacky music videos set to songs he also wrote based on the poems. Petta offers the performance to companies as entertainment for their employees at company sponsored events, annual meetings, and parties.

“When I first came up with ‘Office Poetry’ I wanted to make sure that it appealed to a mass audience. I loosely based it off of Shel Silverstein’s ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends’ that has been a timeless classic for people of all ages. But I also wanted to target working adults, not traditional poetry readers, so I steered away from the existential free verse and stuck to rhyming patterns that were quick, witty, insightful and relative to almost any office in the country. I believe ‘Office Poetry’ is the first book of its kind that contains comedic poetry and illustrations that are entirely focused on the workplace.”
