Palo Alto, California -- October 5, 2006 -- greendimes, a startup aiming to help consumers and businesses improve the environment, launched its first service today. A blend of social good and capitalism, greendimes will stop postal junk mail for as little as a dime a day and plant a tree every month on each member’s behalf.

Aside from being a social nuisance, junk mail also does considerable damage to the environment. Each year, an estimated 100 million trees and 28 billion gallons of water are used to produce junk mail. Furthermore, paper makes up a third of the 235 million tons of waste sent to landfills annually.

greendimes (www.greendimes.com ) will remove members from dozens of direct marketing lists and plant a tree on every member’s behalf each month. Members can also choose which catalogs to cancel and include additional household members under the same address. Included in membership is an auto-renew feature where greendimes tracks the expiration date of each list’s opt-out request and automatically renews the request. Individual plans are either $3 per month or $36 per year, while business plans start at $6 per month.

I think we've found this really cool spot where we're helping consumers eliminate a nuisance while helping the environment,” said Pankaj Shah, Chief Executive Officer. "There's not a lot of time left to help the environment. The fastest way we can make a difference is to figure out how capitalism and social good can marry each other and have a happy existence."

reendimes is based in Palo Alto, CA and was founded by a team of executives from MetroFi, 4INFO, Sapient and Yahoo!.
