For the first time ever, realmums.com.au presents the Real Mum of the Year Award.

In what is believed to be a world first, realmums.com.au is presenting this Real Mum of the Year Award not to the mum who has sacrificed the most for her children; not for the most brilliant of supermums; but to the most normal mum.

Amanda Cox, Managing Director of realmums.com.au, decided to hold the awards as a way to recognise all mums for the great job they do and to highlight the realities of parenting. “It’s easy for a lot of mums to feel unappreciated for all that they do. The traditional Mother of the Year Awards are great, but we want to reward a special mother for her ‘realness’. For the things that she does everyday, imperfections and all. And although only one person will win this award, it’s an opportunity to recognise all mothers for the special role they play,” says Amanda.

You can nominate either yourself or another Mum for the Award, with eligibility for this long-awaited award being simple – you must be a citizen or resident of Australia and you must be a Mum of some description. This includes foster mums, step mums, adopted mums, grandmums and dad mums. And you don’t have to be a Melbourne mum either. These awards are open to mums throughout all of Australia. Nominations for this wonderful award are now open.

“We're looking for Mums who can demonstrate the ‘realness’ of being a Mum. We're after stories that make the rest of us feel ‘normal’; that we're not the only ones who do these sorts of things. They don't have to be inspirational or heartwrenching. In fact, we prefer those stories that make us wet our pants,” says Amanda. Thinking of all the things that a mother has to deal with on any ‘typical’ day, realmums.com.au believe that all mums deserve a medal.

So to celebrate motherhood, realmums.com.au wants to hear stories of mums who consume an entire family block of chocolate in front of their kids when they're misbehaving, as a form of discipline, or mums who drop their kids off at school late … on a curriculum day.

The Award will be presented at Mums' Night Out! 2007, an evening of guilt free entertainment just for mums. An evening for mums to have fun and be themselves, accepting that it’s okay not to be perfect. You can still be a good mum even if you haven’t won a Nobel Peace Prize.

Mums Night Out! 2007 will be held at the Lakeside Bistro at the Melbourne Zoo in Parkville on Saturday, 12th May 2007 – Mother’s Day Eve.

realmums.com.au, the brainchild of Victorian mother of two, Amanda Cox, was established as a support site for mums. It is aimed at all mums, providing support and information in a fun, satirical and inclusive way, via articles, tips and Retell Therapy forums.
