FIRST CONSERVATION ENDORSEMENTS ANNOUNCED IN VIRGINIA RACES Poll Shows Strong Support for Pro-Conservation Candidates
RICHMOND, VA -- A recent statewide poll shows widespread support for improved conservation measures related to climate change, transportation and growth and land conservation at the forefront of voters' minds approaching the November elections. Having worked hard to make these issues political priorities, a key state conservation group recently announced its first round of general election candidate endorsements. A second round of decisions is due just after Labor Day.
"Virginia voters clearly want lawmakers to put more emphasis on preserving the environment," said Lisa M. Guthrie, executive director of the Virginia League of Conservation Voters (VALCV), whose Board of Directors voted on the endorsements. "I'm optimistic we'll have a new legislature in 2008 that will deliver the kind of stewardship Virginians want."
The VALCV endorsements went to candidates for the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate. To earn the endorsement, candidates are evaluated based on a combination of their voting records (for incumbents), their responses to a candidate questionnaire, and personal interviews conducted over the summer. The endorsements play a large role in determining where the VALCV will direct its political action committee (PAC) dollars.

Three quarters of VALCV-endorsed candidates won their races in 2005 and over 80% won in 2003.
In June, the Virginia League of Conservation Voters - Education Fund commissioned a bipartisan independent poll of Virginia voters. The poll showed majorities of over 60 percent expressed support for more state involvement in global warming, cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay; and rating a candidates view on sprawl and growth as key to their vote. VALCV is the statewide nonpartisan political action arm of Virginia's conservation community. VALCV is the only organization dedicated solely to legislative advocacy and direct political action on behalf of the conservation issues defined by local, regional, and state organizations.
