First Aglow Conference for North America Set for Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE – The first ever Aglow International North America Conference will be held this year from Thurs., Sept. 28, to Sun., Oct. 1, at the Midwest Airlines Center in Milwaukee, Wis. Aglow International is an organization of Christian women (recently having opened its membership to men as well), with more than 4,000 local groups in 164 nations around the world. It has been one of the largest international women's organizations anywhere, consisting of over 1,100 local groups in the U.S. alone. Aglow typically reaches an estimated two million women each month through local groups that are the heart of the organization.
The 2006 conference, themed “Destiny,” will welcome women and men from across the U.S. and Canada who are active in the organization’s interdenominational ministry. It will feature inspirational and motivational speakers, regional and national group meetings, tours of the Milwaukee area, information sharing, and more.
“This is an exciting ‘first’ for Aglow,” said President Jane Hansen, referring to the premier North America conference. “We look forward to exploring the purpose and the destiny that our two nations have together. I see Canada and the U.S. as a great force in the world.”
Milwaukee was chosen as Aglow’s conference city because of its strategic location for both Canadian and U.S. attendees, and the welcoming attitude of its convention and visitors bureau, Visit Milwaukee.

Aglow provides small group studies, care and support groups, retreats, and annual conferences for its members. Local groups offer prayer and spiritual support to members and those in need of help, and they respond to community needs including gifts of clothing, food, housecleaning, and babysitting. Aglow women reach out to other women in prison, senior homes, inner city neighborhoods, and mental health centers as well as single mothers and average woman needing spiritual fulfillment.
Aglow began in 1967 with four women who expressed a desire to meet together as Christians without denominational boundaries. The first general meeting was held in Seattle, Washington, close to Aglow’s current worldwide headquarters. The meeting drew more than 100 women who then arranged gatherings in other communities surrounding Seattle. As the word spread, new groups began springing up around the state, and within months, groups formed in other U.S. states as well.
By 1972, more than 60 local groups held monthly meetings around the U.S. By 1973, Aglow was moving onto the global stage as fellowships began in Canada and New Zealand. The Netherlands followed in 1974, marking Aglow as an international organization in just six years.
Today, Aglow spans the globe, reaching out to women and men of every creed, color, and culture, and, through its members, to families worldwide. More than 21,000 Aglow leaders worldwide minister in their communities and countries to an estimated 17 million people each year.
