Albertville Alabama - April 27, 2006 - - While many eleven-year-olds are busy downloading music onto their ipods or playing video games, fifth-grader Will Siskey is busy honing his culinary skills. The elementary student recently attended Paula Deen’s Cooking Class and The 700 Kitchen School.
“Will applied for the Paula Deen’s School ahead of time but was turned down because he was not 16-years-of-age, which was one of the school’s requirements,” said his mom, Rebecca Rogers.
Being turned down did not dissuade young Will from still wanting to go to Savannah for his spring break. After all, history is his favorite subject in school, so his trip was still on. Of course, one of the first things he wanted to do was visit Paula Deen’s Restaurant, The Lady and Sons. While he and his mom were at the famous restaurant, they met Bobby, one of Paula Deen’s sons. Bobby was so impressed with the young man’s questions and interest in the culinary arts that he immediately reserved a spot for Will in his famous mother’s class.
“Can you believe it,” said the enthusiastic future chef. “A lot of those people had their reservations in for months ahead and he just picked up the phone and I got to go after all.”
Will attended classes 4 days a week at the 700 Kitchen School with Chef Darin Sehnert and with Paula Deen on Friday. “I learned a lot of things,” said Will, demonstrating how a chef should hold a knife and cut on a cutting board. “I found out I had been holding it wrong, but I won’t do that anymore. I also learned how to tell what is missing from a food. Did you know the tongue has different sections for tasting?” Will said he also found out some of the best foods for you are simple to prepare.
While attending the 700 Kitchen Cooking School, Will impressed Chef Darin Sehnert so much that he had young Will as his assistant in the kitchen.
Will has high hopes for his future. He wants to eventually go to culinary school and have his own restaurant. Will is now busy preparing cooking classes for children at the Lumpkin House Restaurant during summer break. He has also been contacted by several companies in Alabama about hosting cooking classes for children.
