Excerpt from Thompson interview, author “Land of Opportunity Forever”
Jan 02, 2008 -- /prbuzz/ --Press: Being an Information Technology expert, how did writing about social subject come about?
Thompson: Basically am a casual critic and writing technical documents, dissertations and business proposals had been always a part of my profession. Social concerns stems from my natural customer service orientation I guess. However the reason of this particular book was sheer frustration of seeing many folks taking opportunities and power status for granted.
Press: What are the issues you are debating?
Thompson: Well am debating nothing (unintelligible). All that I try to do in this book is highlight common issues in an interesting and logical sequel so that even impatient reader starts to ruminate and could reevaluate their own dreams; the powerful concept called ‘American Dream’.
Press: Do you believe whether the issues highlighted are also faced by other countries?
Thompson: Every society will have issues and yes I do see a lot of challenges especially for youths even in developed Nations. Though developing countries have issues due to denied opportunities and poor leadership but in the case of United States there are no excuses and we could do much better. To emphasis the greatness and resourcefulness of the U.S. and to make sure we don’t take anything for granted, a comparison is necessary, so my natural preference was India.
Press: Why is India taken as a model in your book?
Thompson: Good question. Because am from India (unintelligible). Actually if you seriously notice, India with absolutely no infrastructure, high illiteracy rate, with largest illegal immigration problem and being a nation hit by the worst state sponsored terror, still continues to surprise the world by its economic success.
Press: Since your book is all about social issues, have you thought how you want to focus on these issues in the future?
Thompson: Well, I think people need to be informed of many issues, especially the ones inadvertently considered normal. A lot of people that I met said they didn't even know that in the U.S. cyber bullying is a federal crime or stress in America’s no.1 problem. I think informing people would help.
Press: What has the experience been like so far writing this book?
Thompson: Very interesting. Actually I had to read a lot for this project.
Press: How can readers get in touch with you?
Thompson: That's simple, visit www.superpowerforever.com. Thanks for your time and have a merry Christmas.
