Dec 19, 2007 -- /prbuzz/ --The value of European mergers and acquisition (M&A) deals was up 20 per cent in 2007 compared with last year, new data reveals.
Figures from Zephyr show that there were £647 billion-worth of M&A deals enacted across Europe during the period.
Of the EU countries, the UK captured the largest share of the deal financing with £175 billion of transactions.
Zephyr's data has been interpreted as an indication that the sector remained strong despite the impact of the credit crunch and turmoil in financial markets.
However, although the overall value of the deals was up the volume of transactions was down 50 per cent during the period.
Nonetheless, Lisa Wright, commercial director of Zephyr, said the figures represented a cleaner bill of health for the M&A sector than might have been anticipated.
She told City AM: "Despite a clear downturn in the third quarter when the credit crunch hit home, 2007 is a healthy year for M&A activity in Europe."
