The Great Zucchini addresses childcare controversy Eric Knaus talks about the importance of men in daycare facilities
WASHINGTON – As the school year starts, and children begin daycare, many parents find themselves scrutinizing childcare facilities that hire men as caregivers. Eric Knaus, alias The Great Zucchini, weighs in on the controversial subject.
“It's a shame that people would not want their child in a daycare facility with a male,” says Knaus. “We can't have it both ways. Society wishes for more men to be sensitive and nurturing. However, these men are questioned when they show a caring side toward younger kids. It breaks my heart to think that some people would deny a positive relationship with a male because of a media driven society that only highlights the pedophiles and negative males in children’s lives.”
Knaus is Washington D.C.’s most popular preschool entertainer. He trained as an Early Childcare professional, and has over 15 years of experience with children working in childcare facilities. Prior to that, Knaus spent many years working as a baby-sitter and a camp counselor.
“When he worked in our childcare center, he was phenomenal,” says Kathi Carey-Fletcher, Director of Auxiliary Services of Montgomery College. “He was a popular item, because there are not many men in the childcare industry. He was sensitive to the needs of the children and took great care of them - he fed the children, changed them, and rocked them to sleep. He was a major asset.”
Knaus has performed on the grounds of The White House, various embassies, Vice President Dick Cheney’s house, and a multitude of homes and venues. Gene Weingarten of the Washington Post featured him in the article The Peekaboo Paradox. Writer/producer Doug Prochilo, in connection with Mosaic Media Group, is writing a screenplay about his life.
