Hayward, California -- August 18, 2009 -- "Bound for Glory: A Woody Guthrie Celebration" opens September 1st and runs through September 30th at Casa Sandoval, a senior living community in Hayward, California. The Woody Guthrie Foundation is thrilled to unveil this amazing exhibit for the first time on the West Coast.

“We’re so happy to be bringing Woody’s story and legacy back to the West Coast,” said Nora Guthrie, daughter of the legendary songwriter. “So much in the education of who Woody Guthrie was has changed since he was last here in the 1950’s. We’re so happy to be bringing him home after all these years.”

The public is invited to attend the daily art exhibit and all Saturday afternoon movie screenings, free of charge. Donations will be accepted, with all proceeds going directly to the Woody Guthrie Foundation. The full schedule of exhibits, film screenings and discussions is available at http://www.casasandoval.com/events/special.asp

“Initially, we were planning to open this event to our residents only,” said Casa Sandoval owner Wai T. Chang. “However, an open event promises to be a treat to Woody fans, as well as everyone who loves and appreciates arts and music.”

Woody Guthrie is an American music legend. Many of his folksy tunes were written during the Great Depression era of the 1930s, when a struggling America was seeking comfort and simplicity. Songs like This Land is Your Land and Dust Bowl Refugee told the story of an easygoing man trying to survive in a complicated world. His prolific song writing inspired a legion of recording artists, including his own son Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, John Cougar Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen and Joan Baez.

Nora Guthrie has curated "Strokes of Electricity", a vast collection of Woody’s artwork that documents the role of art throughout his life. Nora will conduct an in-depth series of discussions showcasing her father’s artwork, his creative relationship with his Jewish mother-in-law, Aliza Greenblatt, and a biographical multimedia presentation. The highlight of the discussion series, "Strokes of Electricity", is a living demonstration of Woody’s skills as a portrait artist and illustrator and is open to the public on September 26th.

Casa Sandoval will also screen five films that trace Woody Guthrie’s life and document his true passions and outstanding contribution to American art and music. Residents and the general public will enjoy screenings of "Bound for Glory" on September 5th; "This Machine Kills Fascists" on September 12th; "A Vision Shared" on September 18th; and a double feature on September 19th: "Hard Travelin’" and "Roll on Columbia". "Man in the Sand", with an introduction by Nora Guthrie, caps off the movie screenings on September 27th.

Casa Sandoval’s own band, Mr. C and the ET, will sing Woody’s songs on September 26th, including: This Land is Your Land, Hobo’s Lullaby, The Sinking of the Reuben James, Oklahoma Hills, My Peace, Roll On Columbia, Union Maid, Grand Coulee Dam, Pastures of Plenty, and Lonesome Valley.
