DREAM: Dedicated to Reaching and Empowering Aspiring Minds
With African American leaders bringing rightfully and important concerns to the forefront regarding the crisis of African American boys, including high incarceration rates, single family homes and lack of need for education, it leaves a question of the status of African American girls. The struggles of African American girls aren’t any less nor less important to those of boys, they simply coincide. Higher rates of obesity, HIV infection and teenage pregnancy are leading factors of why Mocha Sisters Organization senses the urgency to D.R.E.A.M.
DREAM (Dedicated to Reaching and Empowering Aspiring Minds), is a mentoring program designed by Mocha Sisters Organization (MSO) to address crucial issues facing African American girls. Participants in the program are exposed to mentors and elements that increase their knowledge of African American heritage, health, dating, etiquette, career choices, self esteem and respect.
MSO members are challenged to become more aware of their communities by mentoring, being role models, volunteering and presenting positive views of African American women in their surroundings. MSO differs from other volunteer organizations in ways that encourage and promote African American women and girls to live out their dreams, become more aware of our community, stay healthy, and become more business minded. Community programs include DREAM Mentoring programs for girls, KEYAH health fairs, Small Business seminars, national conferences, Mocha Spa Days and community picnics.
Mocha Sisters Organization is a national non-profit organization with its national headquarters in Lewisville, Texas. We currently have branches in Georgia, Illinois, Texas, Virginia and branches currently in development in Florida, Alabama and New York. As an organization, MSO is created and designed to: articulate and promote community awareness, bring unity among women, teach networking skills, and provide scholarships and mentoring programs for African American girls.
