DAVID VS. GOLIATH BATTLE OVER PUPPIES & KITTENS |

Nov 21, 2007 -- /prbuzz/ --Los Angeles, CA… Collectively, the top animal organizations in the country have annual budgets in excess of half a billion dollars per year. They have millions of members. And hold market power over animal welfare issues in the U.S. The Humane Society of the United States alone has a budget of over $100 million every year. Then why are they aiming their sights on a single individual?
“Because I am exposing the fact that they are unnecessarily killing dogs and cats or providing the political cover for local shelters to do so,” says author Nathan Winograd, whose new book uncovers an “industry’s” dirty little secret—that the killing of nearly 4 ½ million dogs and cats in U.S. animal shelters is largely unnecessary. Indeed, shelter killing is believed to be the leading cause of death for healthy dogs and cats in the United States. The book, Redemption: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation & the No Kill Revolution in America (Almaden, Los Angeles: 2007) has been the number one selling animal rights book on Amazon since its release in September, and he has been lecturing to packed auditoriums from coast to coast as part of his nationwide book tour. And that has groups like the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) worried.
“The numbers killed are staggering,” says Winograd. “And for far too long, Americans have been led to believe that there is no other way. That killing is, in fact, an act of kindness for homeless or unwanted pets. But, in fact, killing is neither kind nor necessary, nor will it prevent animal suffering. It is population control killing that itself is the root cause of animal suffering in our nation's animal control shelters.”
The Center for Consumer Freedom calls Winograd’s the book: “the book HSUS and PETA don’t want you to read.” The San Francisco Chronicle says that, "In the still-heated debate over reducing shelters deaths in California, there is probably no more polarizing figure than Nathan Winograd.” But Winograd says that he is merely telling the truth—and with millions of dollars in fundraising at stake, he is being unfairly labeled by the charities who raise the most money because he is exposing the fact that they do the least for homeless dogs and cats. “Giving to animal related causes is the fastest growing segment in American philanthropy,” says Winograd. “Why then are we still unnecessarily killing over four million dogs and cats every year?”
Redemption is the number one selling animal rights book in the nation according to Amazon and is one of the top 500 selling books in the country on Barnes & Noble-dot-com. Winograd’s work has also been featured in Reader’s Digest, USA Today, Metropolitan Home, and in local newspapers, radio and television around the country. His definitive book on animal sheltering in the United States has been called “the bible of the No Kill movement.” In it, he calls for an end to the killing of homeless dogs and cats. “There is no shelter, in any community that can’t achieve No Kill,” says Winograd. “We can stop the unnecessary killing of millions of precious lives every year.”

About the Press Release
Why are pets being killed in America's shelters? Ask most shelter managers, and they'll blame irresponsible pet owners. But a new book blames the shelters. And that has them worried.
