COOS COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY HOSTS THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL CAUCUS IN THE NATION….AND THE WINNER IS
May 14, 2007
On May 12, 2007 the Coos County Democratic Party hosted the first Democratic Presidential Caucus in the nation in conjunction with its Annual Democratic Recognition Dinner in Bandon, Oregon. Ballots were cast and a very tight three way race resulted in a big win for Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Senator Barack Obama trailed by two votes with Senator John Edwards one vote behind him. Throughout recent statewide primary elections, Coos County has been the bellweather for the nation in who will win the Democratic Party nomination. This being said, we feel the top three candidates are most likely to be the top contenders for the national primary election. A spirited keynote address was given by Jefferson Smith of The Bus Project. Followed by the Lawton - Verger Coos County Democrat of the Year Award given to Brian Howard treasurer for the party presented by State Senator Joanne Verger. Other special guests included Ellen King, a representative for Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Bill Russell, a volunteer and event organizer for Senator John Edwards who both spoke to a capacity crowd.
