Call on the Bush Administration to Declare December 1 National Rosa Parks Human Rights Day

Fifty two years ago, on December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated Montgomery, Alabama bus. Her courageous stand against segregation was a monumental turning point in the civil rights movement. It sent the lasting message that the fight against the evil of bigotry, intolerance, and racial hate must never cease.
Today the forces of intolerance are alive and well in America. The spate of hanging nooses, the rise in hate crimes nationally, black and Latino gang hate violence in L.A. and other cities, and the resurgence of the use of racial epithets and vilification by public and private figures is evidence of that. The spirit and example of Rosa Parks demands a rededication on the part of Americans to the battle against bigotry and intolerance.
The Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable calls on the Bush administration to declare December 1 a national Rosa Parks Human Rights Day. The Bush administration would:
1. Urge business leaders, school administrators, and elected officials to encourage students, workers, and residents to reaffirm in word and deed their commitment to tolerance and diversity.
2. Urge others to honor and pay tribute to the spirit and memory of Rosa Parks.
