Bethpage Federal Credit Union, KeySpan and LIA Host Not-for Profit
Fly-In to Washington D.C. with Congressman Steve Israel

Credit Union organizes trip demonstrating that LI not-for-profits are the “Heart of Bethpage”

Oct 10, 2007 -- /prbuzz/ --Bethpage, NY, October 9, 2007 The details are in place for a major Long Island event — even though it will take place in Washington, D.C., October 10-11th. At the invitation of Bethpage Federal Credit Union (Bethpage), and co-hosted by KeySpan Corporation (KeySpan) and the Long Island Association (LIA), 19 leaders representing Long Island’s not-for-profit organizations will be flown in for a two-day visit to Washington D.C. with Congressman Steven Israel (NY 2nd Congressional District) leading a tour of the U.S. Capitol Building and a group discussion on strengthening government relations.

Linda Armyn of Bethpage and Tracie Holmberg of Congressman Israel’s Long Island office conceived of the Fly-in as a natural extension to the free workshops Bethpage hosts for Long Island’s not-for-profit leaders, covering topics from strategic planning to fundraising to board leadership. “We are honored to welcome this delegation,” said Holmberg, Deputy Chief of Staff for Congressman Israel. “These not-for-profit organizations contribute daily to our sense of community, and this collective effort, thanks to Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s leadership, gives Long Island a unified voice.”

"On Wednesday, leaders in Long Island's nonprofit community will travel to Washington for a set of meetings with government officials and workshops on grant writing and the federal Appropriations process," said Congressman Israel. "I've organized this fly-in to offer support and guidance to those that support, strengthen and sustain our community each day."

The purpose of the October 10-11th Fly-in is to provide not-for-profits with an opportunity to build relationships with decision makers and learn how Washington can help their organizations and Long Island’s communities. The two days will include presentations, guest speakers, and a roundtable discussion at the Credit Union House on Capitol Hill with the Long Island Congressional delegation, including U.S. Representatives Tim Bishop, Peter King and Carolyn McCarthy. Senate is in recess but personnel representing U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton will participate.

“We all benefit by raising our profile and learning how best to interact with our representatives in Washington,” said Bethpage President &CEO Kirk Kordeleski. “I thank Congressman Israel for partnering with us and for the valuable participation by our region’s representatives in Congress.”

Bethpage approached KeySpan and the LIA to participate on the Fly-In because of their record of community involvement. “KeySpan has a strong commitment to the communities we serve,” observed KeySpan EVP of Corporate Affairs & Chief Environmental Officer David Manning. “Our participation is an extension of that commitment, and adds the voice of business to the important discussion of collaboration.”

The not-for-profit groups attending the Fly-In include: Adelante of Suffolk Executive Director Miriam Garcia, CDC-Long Island President & COO Marianne Garvin, Central Nassau Guidance Deputy Executive Director Paule Pachter, Education & Assistance Corp. President & CEO Lance W. Elder, Family Service League President & CEO Reinhardt Van Dyke, Health & Welfare Council President & CEO Gwen O’Shea, Island Harvest President & CEO Randi Shubin Dresner, LI Progressive Coalition Director Lisa Tyson, LI Works Coalition Director of Community Relations Lisa M. Strahs-Lorenc, Mentoring Partnership of LI Executive Director Jean Lahage Cohen, Nassau Suffolk Coalition for the Homeless Joan Noguera, Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee Jeffrey A. Seigel, Esq., North Amityville Community Economic Council’s Rosemarie Deering, Natural Resources Defense Council Senior Attorney Donna De Costanzo, Project Grad Executive Director Robert Troiano, Pronto Executive Director Lisette Rodriguez, RELI Executive Director Gordian Raacke, United Way Long Island President & CEO Christopher M. Hahn, and Usdan Director of Development Patrice L. Frank.

Later this year, Bethpage will again be working with the not-for-profit community in the launch of its new outreach campaign, ‘The Heart of Bethpage’. In the campaign’s rotation, a not-for-profit that Bethpage has worked with will be highlighted for a two-month period in radio and print. According to Armyn, “Bethpage is actively involved with a number of not-for profits as part or our mission to change lives through community. We support good causes, but more importantly, we are committed to lending a hand to ensure organizational stability so that mission goals can be met.”
