The Avar Press XEN literary essay scholarship awards are committed to recognizing outstanding students in high school and college. The Xen scholarship essay competitions were first announced in November 2005 and yielded outstanding entries and winning commentaries for 2006. In 2007, Avar Press extended the essay contest to high school and college students in the United States and Canada.

This is one of the only free essay contests that encourages and rewards winners with a cash scholarship prize. The essays must be original non-fiction works analyzing any single aspect of the book XEN: Ancient English Edition by D.J. Solomon (Avar Press, ISBN: 0976066009). This satire, presented as a future “last testament of mankind,” is the story of a misanthropic scientist who rids the world of evil, marking the end of hate and prejudice. Use of the essay as part of the writer’s routine schoolwork in any capacity is permitted.

Submissions must be 1250-1500 words. The winning essays will be published on the xenbook.com website. There are three winners, first place, second place and third place. The essays were judged by the Avar Press literary staff and each decision is final.

FIRST PLACE:

“FEMININE CHARMS”
By Nicole Olson
Anoka High School, Anoka, Minnesota

SECOND PLACE:

“THE THEME OF PERFECTION IN ‘XEN: ANCIENT ENGLISH TRANSLATION’”
By Margaret Koenig
Bonesteel-Fairfax High School, Bonesteel, South Dakota

THIRD PLACE:

“AN ANALYSIS OF THE PERFECTION OF FUTURE EARTHERIAN SOCIETY”
By Ian Harris
Bloomingdale Senior High School, Valrico, Florida

Complete information and all application materials can be found on the Avarpress.com website under the Xen scholarship link. The 2008 college competition will be opened up to students from all over the world. The deadline for the 2008 competition is January 31, 2008. The high school competition will remain open to American and Canadian students with a deadline of May 15, 2008.

The awards have been increased greatly for 2008!
