Author Uncovers Family’s “Gold”.

Winnetka, Il Author and Winnetka resident Ruth Shalett Littman is not your ordinary gold miner. In her own words she has “mined” her family’s heritage and immigration from Ukraine to North America in her spell-binding new novel, Finesilver’s Gold. Over the last ten years, Ms. Shalett Littman researched, compiled and wrote the historical fiction saga about her grandfather, Jacob Finesilver, who in 1894, at the tender age of 19, risked life and death to escape the Ukraine.
Finesilver packed what little possessions he had and escaped poverty and conscription in the Czar’s army by walking across the frozen Bering Sea to the Klondike.8Rescued by an Inuit Eskimo who nursed him back to health, Jacob finally made it to the Klondike and successfully mined for gold. A year later, Malka, Finesilver’s betrothed and Shalett Littman’s grandmother, made a similar journey to the Klondike, this time taking the notorious Chilkoot Pass.
In 1985 Shalett Litttman inherited her Grandmother Bess’ diaries. Promising her mother that she would write the story of her parents, Shalett Littman then traveled to Dawson City, found their names in the Northwest Mounted Police Records and compared the diary information with historical facts from the Klondike gold rush.
“I was compelled to write my grandparent’s story,” said Littman. “Few of us actually know the trials and tribulations our ancestors went through just to get to North America. I spent the last ten years researching the actual route each of my grandparents took, digging through the Yukon Archives, finding out how the miners actually panned for gold, even how the Eskimos lived,” said author Shalett
Littman.
Author Ruth Shalett Littman has had a varied and impressive career ranging from singing with the New York City Opera Company, the Chicago Symphony, and the Grant Park Opera to performing as cantorial and soprano soloist at many Chicago and North Suburban temples including a 17-year stint at Temple Jeremiah. She has acted in notable commercials and one-woman shows, and studied with E.L. Doctorow at St. Lawrence University. Ms. Shalett Littman also co-authored the mystery novel Deadly Prayer with Arlene Paskel in 1996.
