MEDIA ALERT

ATLANTA COMMUNITY URGED TO SUPPORT PANCREATIC CANCER ACTION NETWORK’S TEAMHOPE WALK
ON NOVEMBER 11, 2007

Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death. It receives the least amount of federal funds for research, and little public attention.

WHAT:
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) invites all Atlantans to the 2nd Annual TeamHOPE Walk on Nov. 11, 2007, in Grant Park. PanCAN is a national non-profit organization that works to fight pancreatic cancer in a comprehensive way—through research, patient support and advocacy for a cure. PanCAN creates hope for people affected by pancreatic cancer.

Money raised through the TeamHOPE Walk, which is organized exclusively by metro Atlanta PanCAN volunteers, will be used to support a number of PanCAN’s initiatives. These include direct research funding, patient services, community outreach and education, and advocacy efforts in Washington D.C. The TeamHOPE Walk will focus all of Atlanta on the critical need to find a cure for pancreatic cancer, and encourage hope among patients, survivors, their families and the community by sharing information about PanCAN’s services.

WHY:
Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

Approximately 37,170 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year in the United States, and 33,370 of them will die.

75% of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year of their diagnosis, and only 5% survive more than five years.

African Americans are 40-50% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than any other race.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) spent an estimated $74.2 million on pancreatic cancer research in 2006. This was a mere 1.5% of the NCI’s $4.74 billion cancer research budget for that year.

Research spending per pancreatic cancer patient is the lowest of any leading cancer.
